Gymnastics give Gators another # 1 team

For just the third time in program history, Florida's gymnastics team has
vaulted all the way to the top. Coach Rhonda Faehn is hoping this time,
the Gators can stay there.

Florida was ranked No. 1 in the first GymInfo national rankings, released
Monday. Teams are ranked in the first five polls based on the total season
average. They are then ranked based on regional qualifying score.

The Gators' 196.700 average is barely ahead of second-ranked Georgia
(196.675) and third-ranked Utah (196.325).

Faehn, whose team was No. 3 in the preseason poll, was cautious about
her team's ranking on Monday.

"We may be ranked No. 1 right now but ask me in six weeks where we
are and we'll know where we stand," Faehn said.

Florida has only been ranked No. 1 two other times - Feb. 4, 1989 and
Jan. 9, 2006. Neither season did the Gators win the national title. Florida
finished 10th at the 1989 NCAA Championships and fourth last season.
The Gators have posted a pair of impressive scores to open this season.
Florida scored a 196.55 in its season-opening win at the Super Six
Challenge two weeks ago, then posted a 196.80 in Friday's win over
Oregon State.

"It's only two weeks into the season and our team has done a phenomenal
job," Faehn said. "I sincerely feel that if we keep moving in the same
direction we could absolutely finish No. 1. But right now our focus is not on
that."

The Gators will host fourth-ranked Alabama Friday in the O'Connell Center.
