University of Florida defense finally takes bite out of opponent
BY DAVID JONES - FLORIDA TODAY

GAINESVILLE - The University of Florida defense had been abused in the
last few weeks -- giving up 79 points in back-to-back games and close to
2,000 yards in its last four contests.

But Gators co-defensive coordinator Greg Mattison was convinced his unit
was ready to play this week, so he went to head coach Urban Meyer with
a request. If UF won the coin toss to open Saturday's 49-22 victory against
Vanderbilt, he wanted to defer to the second half.

In other words, Mattison wanted the Gators to kick the ball away and play
defense in the first series of the contest. By doing so, UF got the ball first
in the second half, instead. But Florida's defensive unit also got a chance
to prove a point.
