Spurrier, Meyer is a coach who seems destined to spend his entire career in college.

intrigued by Meyer during the five-week process of searching for a coach in 2004. |

The 'New Ball Coach' won't follow in Spurrier's footsteps
Now that he's won a national championship, everyone is stating the obvious
-- that Urban Meyer is the next Steve Spurrier.
Right idea, wrong icon.
Mark my words: Urban Meyer will not become the next Steve Spurrier.
He will become the next Bobby Bowden.
Much like Bowden, Meyer has all the makings of a legendary, lifelong
college coach.
He has a chance to go down as one of the great -- if not the greatest --
coaches in the history of the game.
Think about it: Meyer is 42 and has 61 victories, three conference
championships and a national title in six years of being a head coach. If he keeps up this pace and coaches until the age Bowden is right now -- 77 -- he'll have 24 conference titles, eight national championships and 122 more victories than Bowden currently has. |
