9 recruits enroll early at Florida
Two quarterbacks and four players from Lakeland will participate
in spring practice.

Florida coach Urban Meyer already is getting a huge jump on the 2007
season. Nine players - a third of the Gators' projected signing class - have
enrolled in school for the spring semester.

The group includes two quarterbacks and four players from Class 5A
state champion Lakeland High School.

"I can't think of anybody in the country that has nine," Meyer said. "That's
a tremendous boost. ... Every young person that has come through early
has a 3.0 [GPA] or better. That tells you the kind of support they receive
from the University of Florida. And it gives them a little bit of a juice, a
little head start going into their freshman year."

Quarterbacks Cameron Newton of Atlanta Westlake and Bryan Waggener
of Glendora (Calif.) Citrus College likely will benefit the most from
participating in spring practice.

Tim Tebow enrolled last January and Meyer and offensive coordinator said
participating in those 20 practices was immensely helpful to Tebow (469
yards, eight touchdowns passing; 358 yards, five touchdowns passing)
this past season.

"Tim would not have played early in the year if he didn't go through spring
practice," Meyer said. "Not in a position like that."

The four Lakeland players enrolling early are offensive linemen Maurkice
and Michael Pouncey, cornerback Ahmad Black and receiver Paul Wilson.

The other early enrollees are running back Bo Williams of Oakland Park
Northeast, receiver Joe Haden of Fort Washington (Md.) Friendly, and tight
end Aaron Hernandez of Bristol (Conn.) Central.

"Their value skyrockets [because of enrolling early]," Meyer said. "They
get acclimated [to college life].

"It certainly is changing. I know across the country, I never heard of this
three years ago, and all of a sudden now we are talking about nine [early
enrollees]."
