Nelson Selected 1st Team AP All-American - Dec. 13, 2006
|
|
Florida coach Urban Meyer has been calling junior free safety Reggie
Nelson one of the nation's premier players since the middle of the
season. The rest of the country is starting to agree.
Nelson, the big hitter and playmaker from Melbourne, picked up some
more national recognition Tuesday when he was named to The
Associated Press All-America team. He is the only Gator on the first
team.
Junior cornerback Ryan Smith was named to the second team, while
junior linebacker Brandon Siler is on the third team.
|
|
Nelson intercepted six passes this season, three against ranked
opponents, which ties for the national lead. He also was a finalist for the
Bronko Nagurski Trophy (nation's most outstanding defensive player) and
the Jim Thorpe Award (nation's top defensive back).
Nelson was named to the Walter Camp All-America team and the
Football Writers Association All-America team last week.
Smith, the former Utah standout, led the SEC in interceptions this
season with eight.
|
|
Siler, one of UF's team leaders, recorded 73 tackles this season,
including 10 for losses.
The three AP selections for the Gators runs their all-time total to 126
honors, and represents their highest total of honorees since 2001,
when six UF players earned spots on the outlet's All-America teams.
Nelson is Florida's first first-team selection since Keiwan Ratliff took
the honor in 2003.
No. 1 Ohio State, Florida's opponent in the BCS national title game
Jan. 8, had two players named to the AP first team -- Hesiman-winning
quarterback Troy Smith and linebacker James Laurinaitis.
