Gator Men's Basketball - 1/14/07
UF's Humphrey Has Hot Hand
University of Florida center Al Horford introduced a new term into the
basketball vernacular a few days ago: the Lee Humphrey Shot. According
to Horford, the shot is as automatic as a layup or a dunk - except that it
originates from 3-point range and can come only from the hands of a
certain aw-shucks sharpshooter from Maryville, Tenn.
"I just run back on defense [when Humphrey shoots]," Horford said
Saturday.
Horford certainly didn't need to follow Humphrey's shots Saturday. The
senior hit 10 of 12 shots (seven of eight from 3-point range) and scored a
career-high 27 as second-ranked Florida hammered South Carolina, 84-50,
in front of 13,828 at the Colonial Center. It was the Gators' most lopsided
Southeastern Conference road win since a 96-61 win at Ole Miss in 1966.
The first five Lee Humphrey Shots - all 3-pointers - fell through the basket
without hitting the rim. Humphrey fired two of those shots while only inches
from the Gamecocks' bench.

"Humphrey," South Carolina coach Dave Odom said, "shot us out of the
zone [defense] by himself."
But even with Humphrey lighting up the scoreboard, the Gamecocks -
who beat eventual national champion Florida twice last season - didn't
quit. Point guard Tre Kelly dropped in an acrobatic layup to slash
Florida's lead to 37-33 with 1:45 remaining in the first half.
Up 39-33 with 2.8 seconds remaining in the half, the Gators (16-2, 3-0
SEC) huddled, and Coach Billy Donovan drew an inbounds play to run
from underneath South Carolina's basket. Point guard Taurean Green
found Horford, who nearly ripped off the rim with a dunk that seemed to
deflate the Gamecocks (10-5, 0-2).
In the second half, the Gators went to work on the Gamecocks' Kelly,
who had torched them for 20 in the first. When forward Corey Brewer
showed signs of fatigue, Donovan called on freshman Brandon Powell.
Powell smothered Kelly, who wore down and finished with 24 points in 39
minutes.
As the Gators built their lead, Humphrey heated up again. He stroked a
3-pointer and finished off a fast break with a layup in the waning minutes.
The final two shots erased the bad taste from Humphrey's first miss.

Early in the second half, Humphrey drove the lane and threw up a floater. The ball rolled around the rim before falling off
the side. Maybe, Humphrey joked, he should have taken a Lee Humphrey Shot.
"I wanted that one," Humphrey said of the floater. "Any time I can make a two, I get excited."
