Land gift will help UF study state and national ecological health
ufl.edu

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Upside-down and flat on the sandy soil, the bucket trap has done its job.

Surrounded by forest studded with goldenrods and the lavender spikes of blazing star, Lori Wendland slowly and
reverently tips the 10-gallon plastic bucket to one side.

She's in the middle of one of the few pieces of bona fide wild Florida left - and the University of Florida doctor of veterinary
medicine is never exactly sure what she'll find.

From under the bucket, she pulls a shell the size of a square shoebox. Holding it up like an oversized sandwich, she
eyeballs the gopher tortoise face-to-face.

Crist reverses opinion on tuition hike
By JESSICA DaSILVA, Alligator Staff Writer

On Friday, Gov. Charlie Crist again switched his position on increasing tuition in Florida when he said he would accept a
proposed statewide tuition increase of 5 percent.

If approved, the increase, which is about $55 per student, would be implemented in January.

Steve Orlando, UF spokesman, said UF would welcome the increase.

"We've been saying for a long time that it takes more than we get in tuition to keep building a great university," Orlando
said.

In May, Crist vetoed a 5-percent increase proposed by the Florida Legislature.

Numbers Game: Lawmakers give UF less
By KIM WILMATH, Alligator Staff Writer

It's no secret that Florida's public universities, including UF, are grappling with massive budget shortfalls.

The state lottery is often touted as a major aid for higher education. The program, which says it boasts a commitment to
education, gave about $1.5 billion to the state Legislature this year. Lawmakers can divide up education funding any way
they want.

The contribution from the state lottery only makes up 6.6 percent of the state's $23.5 billion education budget.

Additionally, the lottery's yearly contribution to the Legislature makes up 31 percent of the program's total revenue.

GPS should be on RTS buses by April
By ILEANA MORALES, Alligator Writer

UF students will have to wait a little longer to track Regional Transit System buses online or on their cell phones.

On Friday, Student Government's Transportation Access Fee Committee met with Bob Miller, associate vice president of
UF Business Affairs, and RTS officials to discuss plans for the installation of Global Positioning Systems on buses.

With the GPS system, students would be able to track buses en route by sending a text message to a preset number or
checking the SG Web site.
