UF-VA partnership expands nursing class size, adds faculty

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of Florida College of Nursing has expanded its class size and will add faculty
members through a new partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs designed to address the nation's severe
nursing shortage.

UF was one of four universities the VA recently selected to form the VA Nursing Academy, a five-year, $40-million pilot

form the VA-UF Nursing Center of Excellence.

By KIM WILMATH, Alligator Writer

Students could lose $600 each of state funding, which would normally cover costs of their universities' academic budget,
if the Florida Legislature endorses Gov. Charlie Crist's proposed budget cuts.

Because of a recent tax-revenue shortfall, Crist proposed a 6.2 percent cut from the State University System's funding,
according to a press release from the Board of Governors, the highest governing body for Florida's university system.

Crist proposed a 3.6 percent cut, $980 million, from the overall state budget.

UF Air Force ROTC cadet soars above competition
By KIM WILMATH, Alligator Writer
Maureen Hartney said she isn't perfect. She's still 15 push-ups shy of her 62-a-minute goal. She only has a 3.9 GPA.
She hasn't saved the world yet.

Hartney, the 20-year-old UF Air Force ROTC Wing Commander, recently topped thousands of cadets when she was
named the Air Force Association's Outstanding Cadet of the Year.

She'll accept her award in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 23, five days after her 21st birthday, which is also the birthday
of the Air Force, she said.

Air Force ROTC headquarters also rated UF's program "outstanding" for the first time in the program's 65-year history.
Only the top 5 percent of the 144 ROTC units in the nation receive that title, said Capt. Scott Norman, UF's ROTC
Commandant of Cadets.

Cuts to matching funds may stall UF construction projects
By HILARY LEHMAN Alligator Writer

With Gov. Charlie Crist's proposal to cut state funds for university building projects, several brand-new buildings under
construction at UF might remain the newest buildings for a while.

According to a press release from the Florida Board of Governors, Crist has proposed cutting $34 million from the
Courtelis matching program.

The program funds much of UF's on-campus construction by using state funds to match the amount of private donations
given to UF.

By KORI FREDERICK, Alligator Writer

Military service runs in Jennifer Davidson's family.

Her father was in the Air Force. He served his country with pride, and he passed that pride down to her.

And even though she decided not to join ROTC when she came to UF, she knew she wanted to serve too. So she
enlisted in the Air National Guard.

"Being somewhat patriotic, I just thought, 'Someone's gotta do it,'" the senior integrative biology major said and
grinned.

Marine transitions from Iraq to UF
By KORI FREDERICK, Alligator Writer

Eduardo Gonzalez's journey to Iraq began when he joined the Marines a month before Sept. 11, 2001. And after several
road bumps - he was greeted on his arrival day by a shower of rockets and celebrated his birthday alone - his trip has
ended at UF, where he will complete his officer training.

"I moved to Florida to become a Gator," said Gonzalez, a Marine sergeant in the ROTC and a senior finance major at
UF. "I've been all over the world with the Marines, but I love living in Gainesville. It's been nothing but a positive
experience for me."

Florida Tomorrow
UF President Machen - ufl.edu

"Florida Tomorrow: The Campaign for the University of Florida" - more than just a set of words, this theme for the effort to

Board of Governors votes to raise tuition 5 percent
By KIM WILMATH, Alligator Writer

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Board of Governors voted at a meeting Thursday to increase tuition at the state's 11 public
universities by 5 percent this spring.

The mandatory increase will take effect in January, despite Gov. Charlie Crist's veto in May of a 5 percent hike proposed
by the Florida Legislature.

In the past, the board has allowed the Legislature to determine undergraduate tuition. However, the board continually
asserted that it had the constitutional power to set those rates, said Bill Edmonds, the board's spokesman.
