CLAS converts salary to TVs for office lobby
By THOMAS STEWART - Alligator Contributing Writer
Despite an accruing $4 million debt, the UF College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Academic Advising Center just got a set
of flat-screen TVs.
The two 32-inch Westinghouse LCD TVs, currently in the lobby of the advising center, are used to display "things like
information blurbs on majors in CLAS or summer study abroad opportunities or new course offerings," said Albert Matheny,
associate dean of CLAS and director of the AAC, in an e-mail.
When there is nothing new to tell students, the TVs are set to CNN, he said.
Although funds are tight, he said they could afford to purchase the $599 TVs because a graduate assistant was unable to
work and they could not replace him, so they converted his salary.

Cost-cutting team formed
By KIM WILMATH - Alligator Writer
The force is with us.
And after the Cost Reduction and Efficiency Task Force meets for the first time this month, students might begin to feel
the strain of UF's $20 million to $30 million debt.
In a memo sent to UF deans, directors and department chairs Wednesday, UF President Bernie Machen announced the
members of a task force that will find places to cut from UF's budget.
After the startup date for a program that would have raised tuition by a maximum 15 percent was pushed to fall 2008, UF
lost out on about $2.7 million, which it was hoping to use to provide better resources for students.

Portable air conditioners OK'd for use in Buckman, Thomas halls
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of Florida has approved the use of portable air conditioners in Buckman and
Thomas halls for this year.
Buckman and Thomas Halls housed the entire UF campus in 1906 and are on the National Historic Register. Today,
they are the only UF residence halls without air conditioning. Both halls have been popular housing assignment choices
for more than 100 years. In fact, most residents assigned to these facilities request the assignment based on location,
hall traditions and lower rent costs. However, some residents are assigned to these two halls when all other residence
halls are full. They have lobbied the hardest for air conditioning options over the years.

More state support helps boost UF research funding to record level

support from the state grew from $48.6 million in fiscal year 2005-06 to $93.4 million in 2006-07.

$13.7 million Shands surgical center to open Sept. 6
By JENNIFER BINGAMAN, Alligator Writer
The lobby at the Shands Florida Surgical Center on 34th Street will smell like solid cherry wood and new paint until it's
up and running.
The $13.7 million surgical center will open Sept. 6 and with it, a revolutionary change in UF's medical processes.
Manually chronicling surgeries on a whiteboard with dry-erase markers that smudge the hands of surgeons will be a
tedious procedure of the past.
Instead, a 42-inch plasma screen will replace it to keep everyone up-to-date.
